Rhymes With Jenny / Smells Like Saturday - acrylic on unstretched canvas, 2011 by Sarah Atlee

This work was created for the exhibition Figure and Ground at aka gallery, Oklahoma City, in May 2011. ~~ Artist bio: Sarah Atlee makes pictures that have been exhibited in venues across the United States, including New York City, Santa Fe, Phoenix, Kansas City, and Oklahoma City. Her work has been published in the Society of Illustrators Annual 51, Nimrod Literary Journal, and her self-published book Normal, OK. ~~ Atlee earned her BFA degree with honors from the University of New Mexico in 2001. She went on to study painting, illustration, and anatomical art at the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York, where she earned her MFA in 2006. Her master's thesis, titled Sweet! Cartoons in Contemporary Painting, analyzes the use of cartoon idioms in the work of several contemporary painters. ~~ After moving to Oklahoma in 2006, Atlee joined the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition and began exhibiting her work in galleries year-round. In 2007, Atlee was among the first group of Oklahoma artists to be awarded the Art 365 prize, which included a $10,000 honorarium and a traveling solo exhibition that opened in March 2008. In 2010, Atlee was honored again as a member of the first Oklahoma Art Writing and Curatorial Fellowship, under the mentorship of contemporary curator Shannon Fitzgerald and other internationally published writers and curators. ~~ Atlee paints full-time in her studio, located within the OKC Coworking Collaborative in downtown Oklahoma City. ~~ www.sarahatlee.com
