Basel's South Bank on the Rhine
Basel, Switzerland was our home base for two weeks. The city sits on the river Rhine, on the border with Germany and France. The super fun thing about that is that an American can feel mentally deficient in two languages at once (German and French) in Basel. Three, if you count Hochdeutsch and Schwyzerdütsch as separate languages (and Switzerland does, despite failing on a technicality the "a language is a dialect with an army and a navy" test). Five, if you run into a speaker of Switzerland's two other official languages (Italian and Romansch). Six, when you realize that everyone there speaks English (after protesting about how badly they do so, with a totally straight face).
And all this in the amount of time it takes to buy a Rivella at a Kiosk. Switzerland: it keeps you humble.
