Grizzly Bear

Ever wonder what the difference is between a brown bear and a grizzly? Not so long ago, experts used to classify the two as different species. But skull studies—along with observations that the two types may interbreed successfully—now confirm that all brown bears and grizzlies belong to one species, Ursus arctos. You’ll still hear some Alaskans refer to coastal bears as “brownies” while inland bears, found in Denali, are called grizzlies. Grizzlies prefer open tundra but may be spotted just about anywhere in Denali, including going for a swim in Wonder Lake.
