Peter Fox - the golden retriever born with a birthmark

    Newer Older

This is my golden retriever, Peter Fox, as a puppy (in this photo he is 6 months old). His parents are AKC purebred golden retrievers with champion lines. Out of a litter of 7 puppies, he was the only one born with a large birthmark down the left side of his face. The other puppies in the litter were pure golden. The birthmark bears resemblance to a dragon head. We've been told by a lot of people that he is a lucky pup. I love him with all of my heart!

Wow! I've never seen anything like that either - I had no idea dogs could have birthmarks. He's a gorgeous boy!

Thank you! Peter Fox was born with a type of recessive gene that created this birthmark. I contacted a specialist in canine genetics (specializing in golden retrievers) and was told that it was likely that a cell in him when he was an early embryo had a reversion back to "wild type" and that cell was the progenitor for that area of his skin.........which is then black instead of yellow. The birthmark was not inherited and it is highly unlikely that he would pass it on.

We have a golden with a birthmark on her right hip and just above her tail. She, too, is a purebred with champion lines. We love her and forget that it's there, until someone comments on it. Her name is Tully, named after Tully's coffee in Seattle. Your boy is so cute!!!

i just had a litter of 10 puppies born this morning and strangely one of them has a black line about the size of my wee finger on its back , i thought this very strange , and i looked the internet and seen your photo, thank you, now i understand what this mark is. i've named him Lucky, so i hope to get him a wonderful home him and his 9 brothers and sisters

Congratulations on the new litter! Lucky is a wonderful name for your new pup with the birthmark. When Peter Fox was first born, his marking was in the shape of a small bat and as he grew, the mark grew also ~ and seemed to turn into the shape of a dragon. This will be interesting to see how the marking on your pup changes as he grows!

I have two labs, one black and one red. Her mom had was a 1/4 golden & dad black. out of the 10 pups there were 5 Yellow pups that all turned out more red than yellow. Chase has lightened with age, now 9 1/2. I've seen one other pup with a black patch on the inside thigh. They thought she was unique too.
Peter looks adorable with the black patch.. you have one unique pup too.
