On Saturday, January 28th, 2012 from Noon to 10 PM, a party will be held to celebrate Australia Day at Boomerang’s located at 3110 Guadalupe, near the University of Texas campus. Australia Day commemorates the arrival of the first fleet to establish an Australian settlement on 26 January, 1788 in what is now modern day Sydney. The celebration will feature food and drink specials, entertainment, a raffle, a silent auction, a “fastest to eat a pie” contest, and more. Portions of the proceeds will be used to support the Austin’s Meals on Wheels and More non-profit service program, and the Austin Crows Australian Rules Football Club.
The City of Austin has a special relationship with Adelaide, Australia through its participation in the Sister Cities International Program. Adelaide is the capital city of the Australian state of South Australia. An official relationship between the two cities has existed since 1983. The cities share similar populations and climate. Also, the cities were founded within one year of each other – Adelaide in 1836, and Austin in 1837. Over the past 30 years, citizens, government officials, and businesses from both cities have engaged in many artistic, commercial, cultural, and educational exchanges. Most recently, the Austin Adelaide Sister City Committee hosted a dinner for the current Adelaide mayor, Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood, when he visited Austin on December 27, 2011.

This event is open to the general public. Make a point to come by for some great Aussie pies and fun.
