Gray Hairstreak on Goldenrod
We had an emergence of these butterflies in the beginning of September. These dainty butterflies move their hind wings back and forth while they are feeding, waggling their 'tails'. This is to draw the attention of potential predators towards the edge of the wingsm rather than the head of the butterfly. This guy has a bit of a tear in his forewing. Strymon melinus, Lycaenidae. Summer 2011, Central IL.
