Saran hair is a beautiful thing

Newer Older

Adrienne (done) and Janelle (shampoo and soak) agree.

Adrienne (LEFT) has had a shampoo, long hot soak then had body butter rubbed into her hair which was finger combed and seperated into pieces then gently combed, working from the tips upwards with a metal comb for about 45 minutes.

Saran is a flexible plastic polymer, it softens slightly with heat to uncoil. You can pull on knots gently seperating hair sideways (do not tug) and the hair then returns to it's form. This is why boil washes work so well on saran hair.

As it is non porous, it can be coated with oily substances without being degraded (don't leave it on though!). This is why saran can't be dyed.

Please, for the love of rerooters around the world, use a proper non static hair brush on your dollies and STOP if you hear a ripping sound. ♥

Janelle. Hey, Saffy, what was the 2008-2009 bratz dolls hair made from? Not saran, right?

Adrienne is the one on the left with the braids. Janelle is the one with bangs and Brigitte (I don't have her) has a headband. They all three share Princess Cloe's face-up.

Hi Jason, I think the 2008-2009 were Kanekalon which varies in quality (can be good in silky straight form as it hangs with a nice heavy feel) depending on the colour and usage.
Today I straightened a Kina's hair (gift doll for my sister) and the pink hair used on the streaks was more brittle and prone to tangling than the black hair but both were pretty ratty and required a very hot straightening iron.
Kanekalon is excellent for very bright colours and backcombing (dreadlock making), I don't think it's the best choice for dolls that people will be playing with and brushing though, especially when curled.

Saffy i have a 2008 or 2009 sweet dreams yas and her hair is verry knoty! (her hair came curly). I boil washed it and nothing happened, maybe ur right, that hair is good for dreadlocks! xD

Maybe you can post pics of Kina? So, should I attempt to straighten my dolls hair with a straighter?

I've been using a wig brush on my dolls, and I'm wondering if by "non static brush" you mean something with natural bristles. I don't comb their hair often, so I don't recall that infamous "ripping" sound when using the wig brush. Do you have a photo or link of an example brush that would be "safe"?

By the way, I love the creative "bodices" you've added in the photo!

Great picture! Thank you for making it available in Creative Commons. I used it in my blog post today: www.maggiesnest.org/2011/04/27/not-so-clean-simple-how-i-... Please let me know if that's not okay with you. Thanks again!

I use my straightener on its lowest setting and it has worked miracles for some of my dolls.
