Sweet Sunday, Ice Cream Edition [162/366]

    Newer Older

    Day 162.

One of my fellow 366ers, flashfix, has been posting delicious photos of sweets as her photo of the day every Sunday. This week I decided to get in the game, thanks to fresh local strawberries and amazing chocolate ice cream my wife made last week.

This is also my first attempt at lighting food with an off-camera flash. Ice cream on a hot night is a tricky subject as there is only so long you can adjust before it melts. Strawberries are tough too, as I couldn't figure out how really get the lighting so they pop.

Strobist info: 430EX camera left and a bit above, 1/2 power, through a white umbrella. Silver reflector camera right.

Taken Jun 10, 2012 in Somerville, Massachusetts, United States
    ¹⁄₁₀₀ sec at f/10, ISO200, no flash.

Nicely shot, lighting is great, with nice highlights on the berries.

Looks deep and dark for homemade chocolate (I think it's one of the tougher home-made ice creams to get right) Looks delicious, but I'm a sucker for ice cream. Thankfully, Ben & Jerry's makes those convenient single-serving packages…

Mission accomplished - those strawberries certainly pop and that's some rich delicious looking ice cream. Lucky you!

That's a really great photo and all but . . . with practice it could be perfect. I'd keep practicing so long as strawberries are in season :)

It was quite delicious, I'm not sure which recipe but I think from David Lebovitz - his ice cream book is our go-to for ice cream recipes.
Thanks! I know it is quite a treat to have home made ice cream. :-)
There are lots of great ice cream flavors out there, but it is hard to beat a perfectly chocolately chocolate.
Thanks so much, it was indeed tasty.
      Of course. :-)

The strawberries have a lovely sheen on them - i hope you ate this after you finished!

Tim, the lighting is technically spot on and colors are beautiful. However, this lighting isn't very flattering for food (I am learning that the hard way). Lighting from the back adds a bit more depth, etc. And some sort of background, matting, or other additional elements. You've seen my stream, so take my unsolicited feedback for what it's worth.

Thanks - and of course I ate it. :-)
Thanks for the advice, I always appreciate it. I need to play around with lighting food a lot more.
