Miletos is one of the oldest Ionian cities and the settlement is more than 3.500 years old. It is near the mouth of the Maeander River in the ancient Ionia, on the Aegean Sea coast, Western Anatolia -Turkey. Mythologically, the name Miletos is refered to one of the three child of Apollon and the daughter of King Minos of Kriti (Krete, Crete, Girit). Indeed, the name Miletos is not a Hellen language originated word. It is from the natives of Anatolia, Luvi/Pelasgos language origin and originaly was Milawanda/Miladawa/Milada. The Hellens shorten it and adopted this name to their language by adding -os.

The city of Miletos was the capital of Ionia in Hellenistic era.

It was on the sea coast with a very important harbor. Around third century AC, the bay and harbor is filled with alluvium. This place is about 2 km in distance to the sea nowadays.

The philosopher Thales of Miletos who was one of the Seven Sages of Greece ( or Seven Wise Men).
