LEGO® Brick NASA SLS Rocket

After building my 6m Saturn V rocket way back 2012 I said I'd never build anything taller. And yet here we are- the new tallest LEGO® model in the southern hemisphere!

This model of NASA's planned "Space Launch System" Rocket, which will hopefully take humanity to Mars, is 7.5m tall and was a whole new level of hard to design and build.

One of most time-consuming parts was actualy building the central rocket in dark orange. At the time of building all we had were 1x6s and 1x4s, and boy did we use THOUSANDS of them! Some 2x4s would've made life a lot easier, but unfortunately LEGO didn't start producing them until AFTER we'd finished building!

To make this monstrous 500kg model portable we had to design it to split apart into 13 sections that slot and stack over steel cores that are fixed to the staging it sits on to make sure it's safe and secure for the public.

The model was designed by myself and Russell Søren-Larsen, then built by me, Claire Ashworth, Troy Walker and Luke Cini over 563 hours using an immense 460,323 LEGO® bricks!
