The Thames Tunnel opening was a finale to London's 2010 East Festival. The tunnel was only open on Friday and Saturday and was the first time pedestrians have walked the tunnel in 145 years. It was once considered the 'Eighth Wonder of the World' and half the city of London paid to walk the tunnel when it opened in 1843. The tunnel, which runs between Rotherhithe and Wapping and was built by Marc Isambard Brunel, took 18 years to dig and was the first to built underneath a navigable river. In 2010 it will reopen officially as part of the London Overground.
