the Ride of Perseids.
Last night/early this morning were the peak hours for the Perseids Meteor Shower.
I had been planning this night for a while, the weather was going to be nearly perfect. The days leading up to last night were total washes. Too humid, raining, or too much cloud cover.
I met 2 of my friends at Beaver Meadow Observatory as well as a reporter from the local news here in Buffalo, WGRZ. The observatory was open and a few members were inside. We hung out with them, got to experience the telescopes, retractable roofs, and frozen Oreos. It was absolutely outstanding!
My 2 friends and I walked to the dock on the lake at the observatory and set up for probably about 2 hours. We were seeing almost 100 an hour, some small, some would light the entire sky up! Here, you can see a large meteor whizzing by the lake, with the Milky Way behind it, and Pleaides to the right. It illuminated the entire sky, and was brightly visible for a good 5 seconds. The "trail" or "imprint" it left in the sky was visible for almost 30 seconds.
As I got home around 4:30 am, right outside the bright city of Buffalo, I could still see many in the sky. I had such a fun night, the sky brings people together and it lets our minds wander as they should. Spending quality time with great friends is also something we take for granted far too often. Go have some fun.
I'm still without a working computer. This is a straight RAW image sent from the Sony to my iPhone.
