To generate cheezy "shaped highlight" effects, merely:
1.) Cut out pieces of paper with shaped holes in the center (make sure they are big enough to cover the front of your lens/hood).
2.) Tape them to a ring of paper that is slightly larger than the hood of the lens you want them on.
3.) If you're going to be shooting during the day you will have to make these out of something that will block light better than copy-paper (maybe make them out of black craft paper or coat them in black tape?)
4.) Put one (or more) over the front of your lens.
That's it, highlights in the out of focus areas will be the shape you cut out!
This trick works best with large aperture lenses.
