The Katana is a curved long sword which was traditionally worn by the Japanese Samurai from the 1400s onwards. It was almost always paired up with the Wakizashi which is notably smaller. When worn together the pair of swords were called Daishō, which translates literally as "large and small". The katana was often called the sword or the long sword and the wakizashi the companion sword. Sometimes a Tantō was worn which is more like a large dagger.
