‘Head of the Madonna’
Andrea del Sarto
Italian, Florentine, 1486-1530
Oil on wood
This is the only surviving fragments from a painting of the Madonna and Child with Saint John the Baptist. The original composition is known from an engraving by Cornelis Bloemaert and a painted copy by Sassoferrato, done when the picture belonged to the Marchese Vincenzo Giustiniani in Rome. It is an early work by Sarto, painted around 1506-10. The frame is seventeenth-century, probably Bolognese.
