22/1/2018 i3

We will need a new car in September once our current lease is up, so we are looking around for something more eco-friendly; both kinder on the environment and the wallet at the same time.

I don't think we can actually do both of those things, but we are hoping to go full electric vehicle at some point. This next car is most likely to be a hybrid I think (the range of EVs is a bit disappointing at the moment) but we shall see.

This weekend we managed to get hold of this BMW i3, which our local BMW dealer have given us for a day or so to try out. It's probably one of the better EVs at the moment, though would be right at the top of affordability for us. It's range is slightly better than the current Leaf, and this version had a range extender in it, pushing the total achievable distance closer to the 200 mile mark (on a good day, not in the cold of January obviously).

I really liked it, but Jo isn't so sure. It's a fabulous car to drive - it's an utter rocket from 0-40mph, but becomes rather more pedestrian after that. It's roomy inside and contains most of the bells and whistles you'd expect from a modern car.

There were a few occasions when it wouldn't start - it seemed to be whinging about something not being ready, but it was really difficult to tell what - and the controls for all the widgets are all over the place. BMW really need to employ someone with the UX expertise, but otherwise the car is excellent. I'd certainly consider it as a full-time vehicle, especially with the range extender in it.

The boot is a bit small (OK, very small) and there's only four seats, but it'd be fine for our little family for 95% of the time.

The next car to try has a lot to match up to.
