Summer is a time for feeling brighter, and in the summer of 2010 Ruthin Craft Centre welcomed an exhibition that made visitors feel just that. Comprising of work by thirteen leading contemporary applied artists linked by the theme of one of the simplest but most emotive words in our language – ‘Smile’.

Curated by Mary La Trobe-Bateman,‘Smile’ looked at how craft makers have explored the quintessentially British love of everyday humour. Many of the works suggested memories of childhood and longago holidays or handle the comedy in ordinary life. Every piece in the exhibition was invited spending time with – whether to uncover a deeper message or admire the maker’s skills and find another aspect of the work that makes you smile.
