Fortress Prison: Peniche, Portugal; Fortaleza de Peniche

This is a photo of the fortress prison (now a museum) which housed political prisoners in the 1930s through early 1970's in Portugal. During the Portuguese Estado Novo (Dictatorship)

Before that it was a coastal fortress.

This photo is from the land side, showing the main entrance and the flushing mechanism under the fort.

The waves and tide flushed the under side of the fort through the pictured tunnel. They dumped their refuse and offal through an opening in the courtyard into this tunnel to be flushed away by the sea.

I think this area of Portugal is the best, it is on the coast about 30 miles north of Lisboa (Lisbon)

I have visited almost all the areas of Portugal in the past 5 years.
