Roman Gravestone

Roman gravestone discovered in 1884 in the garden of the Rose and crown Hotel, Ilkey. It shows a young woman sitting in a high backed chair with her hair in the native British style of two long plaits held in her hands. She originally came from the native British tribe of the Cornovii who lived in the area around the Welsh/Shropshire border and the quality of the gravestone would suggest that she was of some high status.
