    Dark mafic minerals, maybe some plagioclase, but otherwise I wish I knew more about minerals in thin section.

    This is the Powell kyanite schist from northern Wisconsin, as seen in cross polarized light. Many of the brown/green/tan minerals concentrated left of center are biotite. The poikiloblastic black minerals concentrated right of center are garnet. There are a couple of kyanite grains show first-order yellow colors. Most of the rest of it is quartz or plagioclase (first order grey).

    Ron Schott: Ah gneiss, I mean nice schist. ;) I can see the elongation of the kyanite grains but never would have been able to say that was them without the blue color.
