Falling light -- Umptanum Falls, Washington State DSC_8490-Edit
this idea has been bugging me for the past couple of years but never seemed to find all the right elements all in one place. Then the other day a friend posted a photo of Umptanum Falls near Ellensburg, WA and I thought "that's the place!"
The lights falling down the waterfall come from 16 small LED "votive candles" purchased at the local hardware store. These are small black plastic shells with a clear dome, which float and are reasonably waterproof. I had a friend wait at the top of the falls with a bag full of 'em, while I took a test exposure of the falls -- then did a time exposure while the lights were let loose to flow down the falls.
Some of the adjacent photos in the set show some sense of scale of the falls -- top to bottom it's about 35 feet tall.
about half the lights failed by the time they reached bottom. But we were able to recover them.
