Harris Institute Technical College 1897

Edmund Harris died on May 27th 1877 at his home at Whinfield House, Ashton on Ribble. Virtually the whole of the 300,000 pound Harris fortune was devoted to religious, educational and philanthropic causes. He bequeathed 122,000 pounds to build the Harris Free Library, Art Gallery and Museum. Preston Corporation provided the site adjacent to to the market place for 30,000 pounds and furnished the new library with books from Dr. Shepherds reference library. A further 100,000 pounds was used to establish the Harris orphanage in Fulwood, while the third main benificiary of 78,000 pounds was the Harris Institute and Technical College (now UCLAN)

The Harris Charity continues to this day with grants to assist those under age 25.
