Tony Gwynn 6-16-2014
San Diego lost one of it's most beloved icons today. Tony Gwynn passed away after a long bout with oral cancer. Though he was originally from Long Beach, California, his many years in San Diego made him an honorary "native". First as a two-sport athlete at San Diego State University (basketball/baseball) followed by a distinguished 20 season career with the San Diego Padres, earning him the moniker "Mr. Padre". After retiring from MLB he went on to become the manager of the San Diego State Aztecs baseball team...his Alma Mater. His passing is a tremendous loss that is difficult to put into words. Many of us grew up watching him play. His infectious smile and personality are embedded in our memory. Tony was the heart of this city and everybody loved him. We will miss you, Tony Gwynn. Rest in Peace.
