This aircraft, Tu-154M "Lux", c/n 90A837, registration "101", completed on 29 June 1990, crashed near Smolensk, Russia on 10 April 2010, killing everyone on board, including the president of Poland Lech Kaczynski and his wife Maria. Other top Polish officials were on board as well.

The tragedy gains an additional dimension when seen in context with the purpose, location and mission of the president's visit.

Here, the aircraft is seen taking off from Tallinn in August 2008, after visiting Georgia with presidents Kaczynski, Adamkus and Ilves, and prime minister Godmanis on board. Lech Kaczynski, having helped ending the communist era in Poland, felt it important to show support to Georgians during the Russian invasion.

My condolences to the people of Poland on this tragic day.
