Rogue Hops
Rogue Hops

If you saw the title “Rogue Hops” on a movie marquee, visions of an alien life form controlled by a mad scientist bent on taking over the world would come to mind, but that’s not the case here...Hmmmm...Okay, maybe when you boil it all down, that’s not all that far from the truth in this case.
We’re not talking about a scientist, but a brewermaster and maybe MAD is too strong a word to describe John “More Hops” Maier of Rogue Ales, I think he prefers the term CRAZY. But Rogue is spreading their distribution all over the globe which is sort of like taking over the world, in the beer sense. As far as alien lifeforms...Hops are a sort of weird plant life that shoots from ground level to 20 feet in the air in a few months, sounds kind of unearthly to me.
So if this were a movie script it would be about a Crazy Brewmaster using alien plant life to take over the world. Holy hopvines Batman, I smell Oscar material here!
I was intrigued when Brett and Jack Joyce told me Rogue Ales was looking into buying their own hop farm. I thought it was a fantastic idea with endless possibilities so I jumped at the chance to join the Rogue crew on a trip out to the heart of Oregon Hop country, Independence, Oregon. Home of Alluvial Farms, 20 newly planted acres of 4 varieties of Hops, and a whole lotta opportunity for Rogue Ales and Oregon’s Beer culture.
