Surprise needle

    Newer Older

Young child who swallowed a needle, unknown to the parents. The parents presented the child to the ER after the mother noticed the needle protruding sharp end first from the peri-anal region. After an uneventful transit through the intestinal tract, feces in the rectum had forced the needle through the tissues as the child was attempting to defecate.

sorry this is a bit off topic Surfactant, but i just saw this article today and thought you'd be interested in the x-rays from this child.

Thanks, Nels. I've been forwarding your link out all day. BTW, I heard late today that the surgery was successful.

I don't know if I can say ouch enough to convey how much I think that would hurt.

did they not do exploratory abd surgery to make sure there were no perfs? it amazes me a needle could have made it that far without sticking!

Exploratory abd surgery? As in, "Excuse me ma'am, we'd like to cut massive holes in your son's stomach to see if there are any little holes in there..."?
I just can't believe how lucky that kid got. Imagine the needle got stuck thru the ileo-caecal sphincter instead. They would have no idea anything was wrong until after serious infection set in.

Exactly. When the child was initially seen, there were no obvious signs of other perforation higher in the intestinal tract. The needle is simply pulled out, the wound is cleaned, you check the rectum for blood and visually look at it with an anoscope. Antibiotics are given. Have a nice day.

The joys of parenting. I think that is a PIN, not a needle. A needle could have just been pulled through.
