Post Office of Luray

I have my own ghostown just 3 miles away from my house, at least the main street. It has stayed that way for many years without much change. Actually most of my life, but change is in the air. The St. Clair Hardware store has been torn down (will post later). The Odd Fellows Hall is actually being torn down right now.

This brick building was originally the Central Bank of Luray. It may have been built in 1892, but an old newspaper mentions the bank in 1889. It survived the money panic of 1895, but not the Great Depression. It was later used as the post office all the way up until Nov. 2011 when it closed for good. Now it sits without the colorful blue outside mail boxes and has been stripped of its flag. Its future unsure.

I have actually done work on this building. I did tuck poiting on its brick and see the iron beam sunk through the sidewalk. An ex-Amishman and I did that to help pull in a bulging wall.
