I have been one acquainted with the night.
I have walked out in rain - and back in rain.
I have outwalked the furthest city light.

I have looked down the saddest city lane.
I have passed by the watchman on his beat
And dropped my eyes, unwilling to explain.

I have stood still and stopped the sound of feet
When far away an interrupted cry
Came over houses from another street,

    But not to call me back or say good-bye;
And further still at an unearthly height,
One luminary clock against the sky

Proclaimed the time was neither wrong nor right.
I have been one acquainted with the night.

The words match the reasons that I love my nighttime walks.

      Great Light.

      I want to believe
In the mercy of the world again
Make it rain, make it rain!

      The nite's too quiet
      Stretched out alone
I need the whip of thunder
      And the wind's dark moan

I'm not Able, I'm just Cain
      Open up the heavens
      Make it rain!--T Waits

such a moody black and white!

      what shall i meet?
      a dark cobbled street
      on a wet late night.

      will it be love?
      or a knife

      or only one come
      to meet me
      and we walk together

      Thanks all :)
@*littlebex*: it is beautiful, and I never get tired of it, even if it's easy to take it for granted sometimes.

      Fantastic shot.

Reminds me of walking home (alone) after the clubs have shut; which reminds me of another 'literary reference':

The city is quiet, too cold to walk alone
Strangers in overcoats hurry on home
Tonight I've been walking in the rain
Someone's been talking and I've got the blame

I will find out wherever you are
Drinking in another club or driving in your car
      Walking through empty streets
Stupid fool, that was yours for keeps

      You're so extreme
I want to take you home with me
Come on, tell me one more time
      I don't mind

Just give me one more, one more chance
Just give me one more chance tonight

Neil Tennant (Pet Shop Boys) 'One More Chance'
