Epiphany at Elefsina
The Feast of Epiphany being celebrated at the port of Elefsina, about 30 kilometers outside Athens, as it is on this day all over Greece, and other Orthodox countries.
Epiphany is a major festival in the church calendar and is celebrated with gusto and enthusiasm. The day marks the baptism of Christ by John the Baptist in the river Jordan, and the revelation of Christ's divinity.
After the Divine Liturgy, a procession takes place to the harbour; from the platform, the priest casts a golden cross into the sea, and young boys dive in to retrieve it. The waters are blessed by the priest, and people take bottles of the blessed water to their homes to ensure good fortune for the New Year.
