Check It Out!

Today's subject for my Daily Bookshot, CHECKOUT: A Life on the Tills by Anna Sam (Gallic Books) is a bit more intriguing to me than most, because I have a personal interest in it. If you can't guess from the book's title or from the shot above exactly what CHECKOUT may be about, then I can tell you that its French author Anna Sam, was a checkout operator in a French supermarket in France.

Yes folks! Originally published in France as as Les tribulations d'une caissiere (Editions Stock), CHECKOUT is about working on the checkout in a French supermarket :). Cryptic or what? :). In very unlikely event that there are still one or two people who still don't get it, then here's the cover blurb, to shed a little more light:

Anna Sam spent eight years as a checkout girl. CHECKOUT A Life on the Tills is a witty look at what it's really like to work in a supermarket: the relentless grind and less-than-perfect working conditions, along with people-watching and encounters with every kind of customer from the bizarre to the downright rude.

So that's what CHECKOUT is all about in a 'publisher's nutshell'. But I said in my opening that I had a personal interest in this one didn't I? Why? Well before returning to full-time education I spent the first sixteen years of my working life in junior retail management, for a large supermarket chain in the UK. I've pretty much done and seen everything when it comes to supermarkets; I can tell you some pretty incredible stories myself. So I'm looking forward to finding out exactly what Anna Sam has seen and done, that could possibly be interesting enough to put in a book. Maybe she'll inspire me to share an anecdote or two? We'll see, real soon.
