Easy Rider Filming Location - Route 66, Flagstaff, Arizona

    Newer Older

This is the scene today, at what is now called Granny's Closet. The lumberjack that was visible in Easy Rider is now located at Northern Arizona University, and has been replaced with Louie the Lumberjack (the name of the NAU mascot).

To see all the photos in this set in context of the film, see our blog post: roadtripmemories.com/2014/07/23/easy-rider-filming-locati...

"Little Louie" was supposedly installed in front of the Lumberjack Cafe in the 1960s along with the two "Muffler Men." However, the only vintage photos I've seen of wood carved statues are this cowboy:

and a Mexican (note both Muffler Men which are now at NAU) are visible):

The style of those two statues is very similar to this one so I think it's very possible. Here's an article about the statue's restoration:

Thanks for the info Debra! I wrote up a really brief description in a blog post about Easy Rider (quoting only what I saw on RoadsideAmerica.com). I may add a little of this to that post with a hat tip to you if that's OK? It's not critical to the blog post because it's mainly just then / now as seen in Easy Rider; but it's interesting anyway!

Sure -- I know you're mostly interested in filming locations. But I mentioned this because I don't think people realize how old this statue is. The Lumberjack Cafe had THE very first "Muffler Man" statue. I don't know if you shot him at NAU. He's the one outside (the other one is inside the stadium). You can "hat tip" me or my website (RoadsideArchitecture.com) -- very nice of you! If you're interested in these statues, I have a section here (the Flagstaff statues are at the first page of the IF Bunyans subsection):

Well I'm interested in filming locations and focus on it when that's the subject of the blog post; but my site is RoadTripMemories.com, so as a whole it's related to anything roadside/road trips, etc., so it's definitely of interest. And certainly fits in to describe the scene then and now. I'll check it out more when I'm on my computer later...thanks!

I added a link to your page on the IF Bunyans at my Easy Rider Filming Locations post. Just as well refer people directly to your comprehensive site for more info! :) roadtripmemories.com/2014/07/23/easy-rider-filming-locati...

Thanks! That was very nice of you. Note that the Muffler Man was not replaced with Little Louie. They were there at the same time (in the 1960s).

Oh that's right; I'll fix that - thanks!
