Big Red in a Chicken Sweater

Big Red is awesome in pink. She is an older hen who does not mind the extra warmth this time of year.

Big Red was confiscated from a cruelty case at an egg farm. She has bad arthritis and gets extra cold during the winter. She also wears pink like it's going out of style.

Why the sweater? Aside from being old and skinny, Big Red is an egg production breed. While other chickens stop laying eggs (or slow down significantly) during the winter, hens bred for the egg industry keep laying. They put all their energy into that endeavor (as they were bred to) that they don't lay down as much fat and muscle. A sweater is one alternative we came up with to keeping these cold-sensitive birds warm during the winter.
