Peace, For a Time
When I first wrote about this picture on my blog a couple of years ago, I was worried about the future of this coyote pack at Ridgefield as the meadows above the refuge were now full of subdivisions and conflict was sure to follow. But on that morning, as I watched from my car as this coyote and its mate hunted as a light snow fell, all seemed peaceful (save for the voles they captured and ate).
I was right to be worried for the pack, for they were eventually all shot and killed, but it was to protect the endangered Columbian white-tailed deer that were moved to the refuge, as studies have shown that coyotes are a major threat to young fawns.
I hope the deer population stabilizes before too long, however, as I miss the coyotes.
