Along the tracks

Gascoigne Wood Mine was the largest coal processing plant in Europe. Here, coal from the five Selby mines delivered all their coal to here to be washed and processed before heading out to Drax and other coal powered power stations. At it's peak, over 50 trains a day transported coal from here. Wistow, Stillingfleet, Riccall, North Selby and Gascoigne Wood all closed earlier this decade with job losses of over 5000. Today, the mines at Britain's biggest coalfield are silent.
