A boy and his cow

    Newer Older

In the cow barn at the Goshen fair we stumbled upon this boy who was sound asleep cuddled up to his cow. The image brings to mind many thoughts:

    1. this boy raised this cow and they are fast friends. The cow is totally stressed in a barn with dozens of cows she's never seen before and the boy is reassuring her.

    2. the cow has to be milked on a regular schedule. Most of the folks who had animals in this fair also had cots inside the stalls so they could care for their animals around the clock. This boy decided a cot was not the kind of bed he wanted. Can't blame him, that cow ear looks pretty nice.

    3. All of the kids who raised these animals have an experience that many in the world do not (call it 4H) and it's important and good. This is not to say these kids are all farm geeks (or that there's anything wrong with being a farm geek); many of the teenage girls shearing sheep had bellybutton studs which might not seem like it goes with the territory.

I guess I got a nice hit of all that is good and wholesome about rural living at the fair and this boy and his cow seemed to be a good, clean representation of that feeling.

Nice doggy! Well, it looks to me like the boy treats the cow that way - a pet dog :)

I love the picture, but I don't think I can show this to my kids... they are begging for a dog and if they see this... well we know what they will be begging for!

alex: he does, the cow is both his pet, his "project" and maybe his milk too.

Mamen: I've seen your backyard and a nice cow would do well there. I've also been to India... need I say more? However, there is a compromise and all Mac users will know what I'm talking about: the infamous "dogcow."

Your kids will love one I'm sure!

This is so sweet. The little boy has his hand on the cows face like he had been petting it....too sweet.

Janel: I love this picture. It's absolutely real: this cow is this kid's animal and there is love happening both ways. This fair happens right around Labor Day so you and Aaron should plan to come up as the photo ops are many.

I'm sure this boy raised this cow from calf-hood. Maybe birthed her and wasn't going to let the cow hang out in such a stressful place alone. It was an amazing scene. Thanks anickue.

For this boys sake let's hope the cow wasn't judged Grand Champion. all grand champions are auctioned off at the end of the country fair. As a fellow farm boy i can tell you how attached you get to those animals.

Reminds me of my childhood on the farm. I have fallen asleep by more than one of my cows.

Rarely do I see something that fits so well with my own 'admiration' for cows (if that's not too bizarre!) - from someone who's always lived out in the country of southwest UK..

      Lovely to see this image

Thanks zurathjr and Balticson. My admiration was for the kids at this fair who raised (and loved) their animals. They had relationships with these farm animals that seemed truer than typical pet owners.
