Gamekeepers Cottage, Hodson

    Newer Older

Oil painting by Kate Tryon circa 1910

The cottage at Hodson Bottom is much painted by artists. Not only is it a beautiful thatched cottage (even today) but Richard Jefferies befriended the game-keeper who lived here and brought the place alive through his book "The Gamekeeper at Home," first published in 1878. Chapter 1 commences with this sentence: " The keeper's cottage stands in a sheltered 'coombe,' or narrow hollow of the woodlands, overshadowed by a mighty Spanish chestnut, bare now of leaves, but in summer a noble tree".
