Whistling Kite (Milvus sphenurus) - 13543
The Whistling Kite is a common raptor over much of Australia, and their slightly raucous but very distinctive whistling call is a delight to hear. There has been a family nesting for years in a tree just outside the place where we are currently staying, and at various times during the day from dawn to dusk we are treated to the sound of them nearby. On occasions they hover over the swimming pool taking quite a close look at us. On these occasions I'm always slightly worried that they have mistaken my remaining fragments of hair for a water-rat, and are about to try to make off with it!
