One does not simply walk into Mordor
The Shard by night, over the River Thames, London, England. Standing 309.6 metres (1016 feet) high, this is the tallest completed building in Europe, and was opened on July 5, 2012. To the left is City Hall while on the right is the moored HMS Belfast, a 1938-launched Royal Navy Town-class light cruiser warship now operated as a museum. Such is the triangular design of The Shard that is was quickly nicknamed Mordor, after the Middle Earth dwelling place of Sauron in JRR Tolkien's books.
This is far from my best night shot, given the wind in the middle of the River Thames and the vibration from traffic on the bridge, but until I get a better one of Mordor - sorry, The Shard - it will suffice.
Taken from Tower Bridge, looking towards Southwark, London, England on September 10, 2012.
