Seeing Your Way Clear

A member of the North West reserve fleet is seen at Lillyhall.

N534LHG is a Northern Counties “Palatine” bodied Volvo YN2 which was new in June 1996 as NV34 to London Central, one of a batch of 21 (N528-48LHG) with dual doors and 75 seats.

Presumably, carrying Preston registration marks, they were an order diverted from elsewhere.

“London Central” was one of the operating subsidiaries of London Buses Limited and was privatised as part of the “Go-Ahead” group in 1994.

In September 2004 this bus was sold to dealers Ensign Bus and the following month it was purchased (by now single-doored and upseated to 79), along with sister N541LHG, by Yorkshire Traction of Barnsley.

With the Stagecoach takeover of “Tracky” in March 2006 the bus passed to that concern and was downseated to 70 and given number 16870, which it still carries.

In October 2009 it was transferred westward to Stagecoach Merseyside and following that has been based at Willowholme depot.

Unusually, among others at Lillyhall carrying this type of body, it features downlights above the entrance / exit door.
