      Thanks, everyone, for your kind words! Isn't it amazing the kind of decorative detail work they used to put INSIDE a watch?! We just don't seem to be willing to pay for this sort of work any more.

      Intrigued me enough to look up what a safety pinion is: A center pinion gear in a watch that protects delicate parts by unscrewing when the mainspring breaks, thereby preventing pressure from being applied to the train wheel teeth and arbor pivots.
