I see Public Image Ltd are touring again. Johnny Lydon in pursuit of the filthy lucre, no doubt.
I remember PIL first time round. When I bought their album Metal Box, the vinyl came in ... you guessed it ... a metal box. It was like a tin that old film reels came in. Needless to say it was a unique concept for a record sleeve, and must have cost a fortune.
Despite being a tad shambolic, PIL made some great songs, my favourite being 'Rise'.
Rise was on the album called 'Album'. If you bought the cassette it was called 'Cassette'. If you bought the compact disc it was called 'Compact Disc', what a genius in original packaging marketing.
The album 'Album' was particularly good because Lydon had some incredible musicians playing on it. I have no idea how he did it. Steve Vai on guitar, Ginger Baker on drums, and if that wasn't enough, the genius that is Ryuichi Sakamoto on Fairlight.
Don't get me wrong, I like Jah Wobble's bass sound on PIL songs, but this new line up brought something new and exciting to Lydon's songs.
I shant be buying tickets to see their new shows, as I fear it is a shameless cash-in. Instead I shall listen to all their albums on my headphones and relive the old days.
