1968 - The Last 'Britannia'..

    Newer Older

'Britannia' class pacific 70013 ''Oliver Cromwell'' passing Chew Moor Sidings signal box in July 1968, with the Roch Valley Railway Society 'Manchester - Southport Steam Excursions' railtour.
70013 was destined to pull the famous '15 Guinea Special' one month later, on the 11th of August, to mark the end of steam on BR - which had actually ended a week earlier, on the 4th of August.
The loco is now based at the GCR, Loughborough, and operating on UK mainline tracks and preserved lines.
Today, the sidings, and signals, and signal box, and telegraph poles, have all gone, and there are just two tracks here..

This picture was Sunday 21st July 1968 and aged nearly seven I was on it. The last BR steam train ran on Sunday 11th August 1968 and not the 14th. Sorry to be pedantic but it makes my birthday so much more important

@Ingy The Wingy, thanks for the correction! Not pedantic, as it is important to get these historic details right, if possible.. Narrative corrected..

Ta, getting my birthday correct is important, well to me anyway. Nice picture I just wish I could actually remember the day

Chew Moor box looked switched out.
No Sunday work for the man there I guess. :-(
