Well it's because of this incident that's why the monorail will never catch on in San Antonio as the future of Public Transporation We are going light rail.I'm surprized to know that the monorail at Hemisfair continued to run another 11 years after this accident.

This is not the kind of monorail that goes between cities!

    Hi Bob,

I am one of the survivors of this accident. I was 12 years old and one of the very few that did not sustain any injuries. Wish I could say the same for my parents. As the cars started falling one by one behind ours, I did my best to ride the car down by grasping the sides. I wound up landing on my Dad and breaking his arm. My mom hit her head on the concrete and suffered concussion that resulted in her losing her sense of smell (and taste). All in all, we were a lot luckier than the rest. The worst part of it for me was riding in the jump seat next to the elderly lady in the small station wagon ambulance (pictured) that was completely crushed by one of the falling cars. She later died in ICU at Santa Rosa Hospital where we were all taken and where I saw her being violently ventilated. That, for me, was the worst of the experience.

The idiot driver that collided with our stopped train was reading a paperback with one hand and his other on the rheostat and just rammed us full speed from behind! One by one the cars fell, each pulling the next one down.

Was the idiot driver charged with a crime? I remember this because my family had been there the day before and had ridden the monorail and was horrified to hear what happened the next day.

Bob, do you other photos of Hemisfair besides the ones you have posted here..
  • robert e weston jr 3y

sagonzales2000 Mr. G. No and now I regret not have taken more. I do have a slide of the tower before the top was raised and I should find and post it.

I am putting together an Arcadia book about the history of Downtown San Antonio. I was wondering if I might use one of your photos about this accident in the "HemisFair 1968"
    Chapter?
Needless to say I would give you full credit for the photo "Courtesy of Robert E. Weston, Jr."
    Thank you for your consideration.
