Before it was the trendy and overpopulated Clark Street Ale House, it was the nice and elegant Clark Street Ale House where you could still find a place to sit and have a drink when you pulled into town from downstate on a Friday night.

But some time long before that, it was actually the Stop & Drink. According to an ex-coworker at Northwestern U., its windows were painted black, making it impervious to outside light. The clientèle consisted of old men regulars and neighborhood drunks. And the only light in the entire place came from a 2x2 matrix of televisions. Three of the TVs played some sort of news or sports or bad television. The remaining one played pornography.
