ahhh, another lazy sunday, watching the world go by....


these ground squirrels live in the western desert areas of the US, and employ some pretty cute methods of dealing with the heat. this one was caught cooling his belly just out of the searing heat of the sun, under a parking lot overhang.


amazingly, "they can live long periods without free water, taking moisture from food and minimizing water loss through behavioral and physiological adaptations (Bartholomew and Hudson 1961, Hudson 1962)."


you gotta wonder how these guys get the genus name Ammospermophilus!?
