Gender identity is the total perception of an individual about his or her own gender. It includes a basic personal identity as boy or girl, man or woman, as well as personal judgments about the individual’s level of conformity to societal norms of masculinity and femininity.

If you walk down your street and you see a man dressed as a woman what is your first, natural, instinct, what is your first thought, would you judge this person?

This was my investigation for my final major project; I wanted to experiment with the general public to see how they would react to this situation.

If I could have photographed sound many people, I think, would stand looking at these images in horror; the verbal abuse was shocking.

Through my images I have tried to capture this emotion, probably built on misunderstanding and confusion because a transgender person doesn’t conform to the conventions of society.

The UK remains one of only four out of 39 countries in the council of Europe, which fails to provide full legal recognition in their new gender for Transsexual people: this failure causes countless problems for transsexual people in everyday lives.
