Red-tailed Hawk Study
Shot on Wednesday August 15th, 2012 around 8 PM on the Grand Pre dyke in Grand Pre, Nova Scotia near Wolfville.
There is a family of Red-tailed Hawks that hunt prey on the Grand Pre dyke farmland.
Often when you drive your car across the dyke road, you will see them sitting high atop the light and power poles that run parallel to the road.
I drew inspiration from my Wolfville Flickr friend Claire ("Jemsabell") who has featured these very Hawks in her photostream as very good, close-up photos.
Last night I was crossing the dyke and took my camera with me with the 55-300mm lens to see how close I could get.
I spotted one Hawk quickly and then moved with him as he flew across the dyke going from being perched high atop one power pole to another farther down the way.
This video features some of the best bird flight tracking I've done so far.
If you listen carefully to the clip with your computer's volume turned up, you can hear the shrill cry of the Hawk as he stays perched.
Today as I drove across the dyke one last time, I spotted all 3 Hawks - a family, each perched on a different pole.
