Heroes in the Heartland 2012
Seven individuals from Southwest Iowa and the Omaha Metro were honored for saving a life or affecting positive change in their community at the 12th Annual Heroes in the Heartland Recognition Luncheon on March 14, 2012.

This year’s honorees are Dr. Curtis Case (Call to Action), Reverend Servando Perales (Commitment to Community), Officers Matthew Digilio and David Ullery (Public Servant), Connie Scherzberg (Military), Steve Cavlovic (Lifetime), and 10-year-old Bryan Botkin (Gift of Life). Seven junior high school students were also be honored for their winning entries to the Heroes in the Heartland Essay Contest. In addition to awards for local heroes and essay winners, special recognition will be extended to the partner agencies and thousands of volunteers in Nebraska and Southwest Iowa who worked together during the catastrophic 2011 Missouri River flood. Mayors Tom Hanafan and Jim Suttle accepted the recognition on their behalf.
