Honorable Mention, 2011 Oregon Salon of Photography, Oregon State Fair
This was taken at a recent Exposure Northwest workshop in central Oregon, Sparks Lake to be exact. This was my first successful outing shooting stars fields and star trails....my previous attempts were, well, less than stellar! :-) Many thanks to Zeb and Aaron for their patience!
As it was pitch dark after the moon had set, I can only speculate the yellow glow on the horizon is from a distant Salem or Portland.
In hindsight, I would have done two things differently. First, I should have used a landscape orientation (although the more I look at this the more I don't mind it). Second, this was only a 20 minute exposure...30 minutes (or longer!) would probably have yielded better colors and more stars reflected in the lake as seen in pdxsafariguy's recent upload (great shot by the way Tom!).
Just uploaded a newer version processed in LR3 this time....I like this one much better as I was able to bring out more colors in the stars. Had no idea there was so much color out there!
