13th of 14 in Bluebird series | Eastern Bluebird, Sialia sialis | Fran's Patio, Albany, Dougherty County (Coastal Plain), Georgia, USA | Fledglings left nest on 13-14 June 2011
Several weeks ago, we had Bluebirds build a nest in a nest-box on our very busy patio. The nest-box was mounted against the house within a few feet of two main entry doors which were used often.
The backyard is small and has over 20 feeder locations and almost always has many birds around, including on the patio. The habitat is not particularly open at all. Several birders found it hard to imagine Bluebirds nesting in this location.
In spite of this, the Bluebirds continued, often FIGHTING with other species, including Mockingbirds, Catbirds, House Sparrows, House Finches, and even a Red-headed Woodpecker who is a "regular" to our window feeder. We believe there were 3 eggs and that all 3 fledglings made it, in spite of the cats.
The 14-photo series depicts the following: ADULTS, FEEDING, NESTLINGS, FECAL-SAC removal, FLEDGLINGS within minutes of their plunges from the nest-box on 13 and 14 June, and finally the empty NEST inside the nest-box before we cleaned it out.
